I have had a mini disaster!
Just because this project seems to be the one most effected:
My computer died and I have lost all of the data that was on it... I have most of it backed up but not the current project. Thankfully my computed died while I was in the printers getting my A2 sheets printed but after I had given them my memory stick with the PDF on it, so that is all I have!! So I am going to have to start again, I still have all of the illustrations that I did by hand, so if anyone can let me know what they think about them then I guess I have an amazing oppertunity to edit! (thats me being positive, really I am crying but my shiny new imac is helping me get over it pretty fast!)

Monday: New computer in situ and I have all my programs back, so I am rescanning and redoing all the cards now!!!

I have been making illustrations!
OK, so after being told that i needed illustrations (surprisingly considering that it is an illustrated book project!) I have decided to move away a little from me searching for my "ideal man" and have decided to make flash cards in the form of "an illustrated dictionary for the words in the ads" (clearly not the title-will work on that)
the drawings are PURPOSEFULLY a bit shit , like retro flash cards but if they are REALLY bad and dont even look intentionally poo let me know so i can make them a bit better....
the plan is to have the original ad on the back of each card but here are some of the ones i have done so far...p.s i know that it is underdesigned.. any tips would be helpful and really appreciated, it needs to look more retro but dont want to change the type because it is in that kids easy to read genre!

Dont tell me the truth about love- Play graphics
desperately trying to come up with new ideas!
- Book where you can change the combination of pages (one of those spiral bound ones from when you were a kid) with different combinations of ideal man etc. Could be quite funny
- Sheet magnets, (like the poem ones) that you can change bits of ideal man's appearance
- Make a lifesize doll, dress him up like various descriptions in the lonely hearts ad and go on a date with them. (cloth doll but maybe whole thing is a bit voodoo!)
- Looking for my ideal man in the paper, the ads seem great when you look at them with the naked eye but with glasses on you can see the real flaws with the person. (could just be behind tracing paper to make it easier)
- Hand held book, like a catalogue, with the ads in, and links to their myspace/facebook/a voicemail account, with more information on them. I could mock up the links and it could be very tongue in cheek and funny with recording of them etc. (is it pushing the format of the book or is it off brief).
-dating guide in the modern city. (not very original but could do it in the style of 1950's etiquete guides.. how to be a lady etc.)
-translation of lonely hearts columns and their real meanings... "passionate about food"= "over eater"; "loves socializing with friends"="insecure and can't be by himself". All of these in a beautiful delicate book, perforations or lifting flaps to read translations.
Are these all too gimicky?!?

Where I am at so far...
I have been looking into ways of showing my "compatability" with some people who have written ads in lonely hearts columns. I have already decided that I am keen on making this book type driven, concentrating on the text and the words within it, and experimenting with the concept of type itself being a type of illustration.
Initially I have been looking at rating systems, and have been looking at icons/glyphs that could be used, however I think that I am keen on using colour as a subtle representation, using sophisticated gradients to portray a shift in appropriateness. Other places where I am interested in using the colour is really subtly on the page ends.... a very slight change of colour indicating the compatability.
My next consideration has been the type itself, lifted from newspapers, I have attempted to give them some order. This is what I have come up with, the text increasing in size to an overpoweringly over-sized scale, OR some kind of navigational interface, a key in the space around the ad, disecting the pro's and con's of the person's ad in relation to myself.
